According to reports, Man City has taken the lead in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz. The Citizens made a strong start to the new Premier League season, winning seven of their first nine matches. However, the team has now lost four matches in a row across all competitions, including two in the Premier League, dropping them to second place and five points behind leaders Liverpool.

During his tenure at City, Pep Guardiola has secured six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, a Champions League, a UEFA Super Cup, and a FIFA Club World Cup. Recent reports claim that Guardiola has signed a new one-year contract extension at City with an option for an additional year, announced after speculation of potential departures including director of football Txiki Begiristain, who has been replaced by Hugo Viana from Sporting.

Spanish media now suggest that the club is preparing a monumental offer that could reach €120 million, matching their previous deal for Jack Grealish from Aston Villa. Besides Man City, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich have shown interest in Wirtz, but the Citizens seem to have taken the lead, offering a contract that not only meets Wirtz’s financial expectations but also guarantees him a leading role in the team.
