Chidozie Awaziem Moves to "Colorado Rapids": A New Chapter

Chidozie Awaziem continues his journey

Chidozie Awaziem continues his journey at "Colorado Rapids" after a successful period at "FC Cincinnati".

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed a transfer to the "Colorado Rapids" from "FC Cincinnati" in Major League Soccer (MLS). This marks his second tenure in MLS, having joined "Cincinnati" earlier this year from the Portuguese club "Boavista".

The 27-year-old left a strong impression during his short spell at "Cincinnati", contributing two assists in seven matches, all as a starter. Acquired midseason from "Boavista" for a fee of €500,000, Awaziem became an integral part of "Cincinnati's" defensive framework.

The "Colorado Rapids", seeking to bolster their defensive line after a lackluster 2023 season, announced the acquisition of Awaziem and his teammate Ian Murphy in a trade with "Cincinnati". In exchange, "FC Cincinnati" received $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) and stands to gain an additional $200,000 if certain performance criteria are met. Moreover, Cincinnati retained a sell-on percentage for both players pertinent to future MLS trades or overseas transfers.

Awaziem's move to the "Colorado Rapids" signifies the latest chapter in a well-traveled career. Since departing Nigeria at 17 to join "FC Porto's" youth ranks in 2015, the central defender has played for nine clubs across Europe, including stints in Portugal, France, Turkey, Spain, and Croatia.

Now, with his transfer to "Colorado Rapids", he is poised to bring his extensive experience to a new MLS endeavor. Colorado, which faced a challenging season, hopes his leadership and defensive abilities can help the club regain competitiveness.

Awaziem's career path parallels that of fellow Nigerian journeyman Abiola Dauda, known as the Nigerian to have played for the most clubs abroad in recent memory. The 36-year-old striker has represented thirteen clubs across eight countries and two continents. Awaziem, at just 27, finds himself at his ninth club in as many years, solidifying his reputation as a nomadic player.
