Why did "Porto" sideline the talented midfielder from "Arsenal"?

How the "Porto" boss's criticism affected Fabio Vieira's career and whether he could return to "Arsenal".

"Arsenal" midfielder Fabio Vieira faced criticism from "Porto" manager Vitor Bruno after being left out of the squad for their recent victory over "Boavista" on Saturday. The former Portuguese Under-21 international transferred to "Arsenal" from "Porto" for €40 million during the summer of 2022, signing a long-term deal with the London club. However, Vieira only started five Premier League matches over his first two seasons, making 49 appearances in all competitions under Mikel Arteta, mostly from the bench.

The Portuguese midfielder returned to "Porto" on loan this summer, with "Arsenal" hoping he would show improved form. But things haven't changed much as Vieira contributed two goals and two assists in 15 matches this season. Vieira was involved in "Porto’s" last five outings, but Bruno decided to leave him out for Saturday's 4-0 win over "Boavista". Bruno admitted afterward that his issues with Vieira weren't related to his recent performances, remarking, “I have to make choices, closely observe the players' performances and their daily conduct.

Fabio is highly talented, but such talent must be backed by a series of conditions. When one or two of those fall apart, it complicates matters. He has immense potential, and I have a large squad that ensures guarantees, yet I cannot relinquish certain principles. I don't need to send any particular message. Fabio knows me well, and we're counting on him. He'll be available again next week. It’s simply a matter of making decisions.”

Speculation is now circulating that his exclusion may signal preparations for "Arsenal" to recall the midfielder from his loan at "Porto". When queried if Vieira would remain at "Porto" for the rest of the season, Bruno stated, “Absolutely. I'll reiterate what I said during the flash interview... For us, talent must be grounded on foundations that must not depart from an athlete's condition, and when that's lacking, I must make choices. Fabio is very talented, and he'll be available next week. I have a large squad that offers assurances and, even if I didn't, there are bases I cannot forsake. He understands that, and we're here for him.”
