Ninou Diatta, Senegal's beach soccer star, prepares for glory in the Seychelles.
Senegal's renowned beach soccer icon, Ninou Diatta, has set his focus on the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Seychelles 2025™, aspiring to convert sorrow into victory following his team's group stage exit in the 2024 edition.
Diatta, who recently steered Senegal to their fifth straight Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations championship, is convinced that diligence and thorough preparation are pivotal to their World Cup aspirations.
Comeback After Early Setback
Diatta's leadership proved critical in Senegal's victorious Africa Cup of Nations campaign. Nonetheless, the path wasn't without obstacles. "The Teranga Sand Lions" stumbled in their initial match, succumbing to "Mauritania" with a 5-2 scoreline. For Diatta, it marked a personal low. “It was a collective catastrophe,” he shared. “I spent the night in tears; I couldn't eat or sleep.” Encouraged by teammate Amar Samb, Diatta quickly regrouped. “Amar reminded me that my demeanor affects the younger players,” Diatta noted. “I had to pull myself together for the team.” His resilience was rewarded as "Senegal" demolished "Malawi" 6-1 and narrowly defeated hosts "Egypt" 2-1 in the semifinals to secure their spot at the World Cup.
A Champion's Mindset
In the final, Senegal clashed with Mauritania once more, but this time the outcome was different. "The Teranga Sand Lions" dominated their opponents, securing a convincing 6-1 victory to clinch another continental title. Diatta’s standout performances throughout the tournament earned him the prestigious Player of the Tournament award. “It’s my first major individual accolade,” shared the 37-year-old defender. “I thought about my parents, especially my dad, who passed away five years ago. This award is for them.”
Preparations for Seychelles 2025
With the title of Africa’s best player in hand, Diatta now focuses on leading Senegal to global success. “We’re not going just to participate; we aim to win the World Cup,” he declared. Senegal’s coaching staff has already embarked on rigorous preparations, intent on avoiding a repeat of their group stage exit in Dubai earlier this year. Reflecting on that disappointment, Diatta admitted, “The 2024 World Cup was a huge letdown for us. We had high expectations but fell short. This time, we’re determined to go all the way.” Diatta’s personal commitment to the team’s success is evident. Even during his holiday in Senegal, he’s taken little rest. “Since returning from the Cup of Nations, I’ve only had two days off,” he revealed. “I need to be at my peak. Resting won’t help me achieve my goals.”
A Positive Omen for the Seychelles
Diatta holds a special bond with the Seychelles, the host nation for the next World Cup. During the 2024 tournament, a player from the Seychelles gifted him a jersey. “I kept that shirt in my bag during the semifinal against Egypt,” he said. “It brought us good luck. Now, I can’t wait to set foot on Seychellois soil.” Despite his age, Diatta remains a crucial figure for Senegal and an inspirational leader. Looking ahead to Seychelles 2025, his message is clear: “Winning the World Cup takes hard work. That’s what we’re ready to do.”
